Recreating Our Lives

Recreating Our Lives

Addiction is so destructive that it can totally transform our lives, sometimes in devastating ways. It changes our relationships, ending some of them altogether. It completely changes our relationship with ourselves, our self-perception, and how we deal with ourselves. When we’re coming out on the other side of addiction, it’s natural to want to recreate the lives we’ve lost to our illness. We want to get back to who we were and continue living the lives we had to give up. What we learn is that the recovery process is about recreating both our lives and ourselves, discovering new ways of living after being changed so dramatically. We may never return to our lives exactly as they were. We may never be the same person we once were. If we’re committed to our recovery, though, we can create even better for ourselves. We can create lives with even more passion and purpose. We can reflect the light after living through the dark. We can have a deeper, stronger connection with ourselves. We can have happiness and peace of mind in a way we never have.

True recovery means recovering from not only our addictions but our mental health issues as well. They are interconnected and fuel each other. When we’ve gotten to a place of more clarity and stillness within ourselves, what follows is a transformation of our entire lives, an overhaul of all the thoughts, emotions, beliefs and behaviors that were holding us back. We can shift our perspective and adopt a mentality of self-acceptance, self-love and self-empowerment. We can shed the limiting beliefs that were contributing to our unhappiness and addiction and create healthier patterns of thinking and feeling.

As we grow stronger and happier, the more we want to rebuild our lives, and having come through addiction, we now feel more aligned with our purpose. We might have goals and dreams that are resurfacing after years of being buried under self-destruction. We can feel ourselves wanting to recreate ourselves and our lives, to bring alive more of who we are and share it with the world. We realize how much we have to offer, and we’re ready to stop holding ourselves back.
